Learning to be quick to listen and slow to speak and be angry

by Veronika Berastsen

James 1:19 My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to becoming angry.

How can one learn to listen?

How can someone learn to not answer quickly?

How can you stop yourself from becoming angry really fast?

Is it even possible to learn this? Can we train ourselves? The answer is yes! With God all things are possible. It’s will be a long and hard process but it’s possible.

I can’t even count how many times I got myself in trouble by being quick to speak. How many times my anger controls me.

All I know is practice makes perfect. How often we pray, pray, pray but when do we stop and listen? Can we hear the Holy Spirit speaking to us or is it a one sided conversation?

When you speak before someone finishes their sentence, you, first of all you look like a fool, disrespect the other person, and lastly can get yourself in trouble.

For instance if you are selling a car and the customer is saying I would like to ask for a lower price. You can’t just cut them off and quickly give them a different price right. You have to listen to them until they finish speaking, telling you why they are asking for a lower price and tell you an asking price. Once you hear them out don’t be afraid to take a pause for 30 sec and just think. For me this pause is awkward because they look at you and you can’t fully think under this pressure. You might think you look a bit crazy standing quietly and not answering because we are so used to instant everything. Instant pot, instant answer, instant coffee…. list goes on.

This 30 seconds of thinking and not being quick to speak can save you thousands of dollars literally.

This is something that I am trying to learn to do. I am a pretty good listener, but I am a quick speaker. I am very quick to anger as well. God is teaching me this by putting me in situations where I do speak fast and then I look back and rethink I should have waited and then answered. That’s the only way we learn. If we pray to be more humble, God will put you in a situation where you need to humble and that way you get what you prayed for. To learn to humble.

Once we are aware of this topic, we become aware of it in different situations. I want to be a wise godly women who is quick to listen and slow to speak and get angry.

May God bless you!
